From our previous ezine you now know the options available for a move to Australia, provided your occupation is on the new SOL (Skilled Occupation List).

If you are in a hurry to move then the fastest way of being able to do so is to be sponsored by an employer. Bye the bye , the word “sponsor” does not mean that the employer will pay your fees but that they will act in the same manner as a “Proposer” if you should apply to join a club.

There are two possible visas:

1. The temporary Business (long stay)-Standard Businees sponsorship (subclas 457) visa

and the

1. Employer Nomination scheme (subclass 121) visa.

Assuming you are eligible, you have all the necessary documents ready, and have successfully completed your English test then once you have made the application you should acquire your visa in about 4 months.

A number of trades men have to complete an Australian Skills Assessment to be eligible for the first of these visas, whereas a Skills Assessment is essential for the second. The 457 gives you temporary residence  and the 121 is a permanent residence visa. Most importantly, you do not have to be under 45 to be eligible. Like all Australian migration regulations there are “exceptions to the rule”.

It should be noted that in order for a company to “sponsor” they have to apply to be able to do so.

The majority of people contemplating moving to Australia do not have any family residing in Australia and are either employed  or self employed in a small business.This article is geared to this majority.

You have three visa options for the route you will take to get to Australia, with the right to permanent Residence

1. An employer sponsored visa.

2. A State sponsored visa.

3. A skilled Independent visa.

Assuming you are eligible, you have all the necessary documents ready, and have successfully completed your English test and your skills assessment,

then the Employer Sponsored visa will get you there in about 4 months,

a State Sponsored visa will get you there in about 2 years and

a Skilled Independent visa will get you there in about 3 years.

They all cost the same.

There are a further two options which provide Temporary Residence.

1. An employer Sponsored visa.

2. A state sponsored Regional visa

These two visas are valid for 4 and 3 years respectively, and this Employer Sponsored temporary visa is very much a cheaper option than the permanent one. Again the Employer Sponsored visa only takes 4 months to process.

Employer Sponsored visas are the best way to go.

As promised here is the lowdown on Skills Assessments. It requires very careful reading.

Skills Assessments

Generally, everyone who is eligible for a visa and who intends to live and work in Australia will have to do a Skills Assessment, conducted by the appropriate Australian Authority.

For Managers, Professionals and Associate Professionals

The Assessment will be conducted by their professional body, many of who conduct skills assessments specifically for migration purposes only, which would then be followed by a second Assessment for purposes of registering as a professional with that body. Others require that you register, and the registration incorporates the Skills assessment. The costs vary considerably and the process of registration also depends on the particular body. You must have worked in any SOL occupation for 12 of the last 24 months.

For Tradesmen

1. The  Skills assessment for the 457 and 121-ENS “Work” visas

A. The following trades require a 457 Skills assessment through an organisation called Vetassess at a cost of A$1200.

Motor Mechanic, General Electrician, Carpenter

B. The following trades also have to do a Skills Assessment and can do so through Vetassess, BUT instead of doing it through Vetassess they can do it through Trade Recognition Australia and it will only cost them A$300.

Welder (First Class), Cook/ Chef, Fitter, Metal Fabricator, Panel Beater, Vehicle Painter, Automotive Electrician, Metal Machinist (First Class), General Mechanical Engineering Tradesperson, General Fabrication Engineering Tradesperson, Sheetmetal Worker (First Class),  Baker, Cabinetmaker.

Any other tradesman does not have to do a Skills Assessment for the 457 visa but will have to do so for the 121 Visa. And the 457 visa holder, once they have worked there for two years, with the same company and subject to Employer sponsorship, can apply for the 856-ENS visa and will not have to do a Skills Assessment at all.

2.The skills assessment for the General Skilled Migration visas.

A. For one of the GMS visas, 175, 176, 0r 475 visas the following trades have to do their Skills Assessment through Vetassess at a cost of A$2100   and this involves doing a practical test in Cape Town.

General Electrician, Motor Mechanic, Carpenter, General Plumber, Refridgeration and Air conditioning mechanic, Carpenter and Joiner, Joiner,Electrical Powerline Tradesperson, Cable Jointer and Bricklayer. Supervisors of these trades are also required to go this route.

B. We recommend that the tradesmen listed in bold should try and get into Australia on a 457 work visa, as you can do the Skills Assessment when you get there at A$300. This applies to the supervisors as well.

C. Other tradesmen do the Assessment through Trade Recognition Australia at a cost of A$300 and this is a paper application.

For Other occupations.

Skills assessment are conducted by Vetassess.

VISA APPLICATIONS SUSPENDED

The latest news is that, as of the 8^th May 2010, all applications for the General skilled Migration visas have been suspended! This applies to

the 175 Skilled Independent visa,

the 176 State Sponsored visa and

the 475 Regional Sponsored visa.

It is indicated that they will start  accepting applications again in July 2010.

I believe them.

And the Skilled occupation list (SOL) is being revised and the new list will be issued sometime in May 2010.For those of you who don’t know; your occupation must be on this list if you should wish to apply for one of the visas mentioned above.

The English Test

Hey ho nonni oh !

All you potential migrants out there need to know that you will have to do an English test before you can be granted a visa. And you will have to score at least 6 out of 10 for each section of the test. The sections are reading , writing, comprehension and speaking.

Some skills assessors, require that you score 7/10 for each section, depending on your occupation.

The exam is offered by a few organisations, of which the British Council is probably the best known.

And they also offer a training package, which, for those of you who are not sure of your skill level, would be a very good idea to do before you right your exam

Even if you consider that you know the language you have to take the exam seriously. Swot up on your exam technique to make sure you pass first time.

Get to the venue early to get a good seat, and take all the right bits of paper.

Australia is coming out of the recession and there are jobs available. Today on a Australian job search website there are following number of vacancies for the trade mentioned in Perth alone:

Electricians-78,

Air Conditioning technicians-24,

Automotive trades-164,

Welder/Boilermakers-63,

Plumbers=14,

Service Technicians=72.

All positions are full time positions.

“So what does that mean?” I hear you say.

Well the answer is simple:  If  you apply for a visa Under the General Skilled Migration scheme, it takes so long to get the visa (over a year) that by the time you start hunting for a job, there should be triple the number of jobs.

But and I repeat But. Almost all tradesmen have to do a skills assessment for the “work” visa and quite a few have to do Skills assessment and a trade test  for the GSM visas in Capetown.

In addition, your occupation must be on the Skilled Occupation List, and you must have worked in that occupation for 12 out of the last 24 months.

What else?

You must pass an Eligibility Points Test and as a first step, get your qualifications assessed by the appropriate testing body.

Of course you’ll need a job.

No Problem. The visa is valid for 5 years so you have 5 years to find a job.
